10 Things to Do with Kids During Summer Holidays (That Won’t Break the Bank – Summer Edition)

Schools out and the summer holidays are here — and while keeping the kids happy and busy can feel like a full-time job, it doesn’t have to empty your bank account. Whether the sun is shining or the British weather’s doing its usual thing, there are plenty of fun, affordable ways to make the most of your summer break.

Here are 10 ideas for a memorable half term full of fresh air, fun, and quality time — without the cost.

1. Park Meet-Ups & Picnics

Team up with other parents and plan a park meet-up. Bring a few snacks, a picnic blanket and let the kids run free while you enjoy a good natter. It’s free, fun and everyone gets a breather!

2. Nature Scavenger Hunt

Take a local walk and turn it into an adventure! Create a scavenger list: feathers, daisies, bumblebees, butterflies, or pine cones. Older children can take photos, while little ones can tick off pictures.  There are lots of free printable sheets if you search online!

3. Check Your Local Council for Free Events

Many local councils run free family activities during the holidays — from craft workshops and outdoor games to treasure trails and performances. Keep an eye on community noticeboards, Facebook groups, and council websites for what’s happening nearby.

4. DIY Water Play in the Garden

No need for a paddling pool — a washing-up bowl, cups, and some sponges can lead to hours of fun. Set up a toy car wash, bath dolls in buckets, or have a water pouring station for safe, splashy play.  If you live near to a splash pad park, head to one for a bit of extra fun!

5. Teddy Bears’ Picnic

Whether in your garden, local park, or living room floor (if it rains), a teddy bears’ picnic is always a hit. Let the kids help prepare the food and invite their cuddly friends for a very important lunch date.  If you have a tent, set it up outside for endless fun building their homes for Ted!

6. Beach Day Adventure

If you’re near the coast or fancy a day trip, a visit to the beach is a summer classic. Pack homemade sandwiches, towels and a bucket & spade — the sea, sand and fresh air do all the entertaining for you.  Don't forget the sun cream, hats and a pop up shade!

7. Budget Cinema Mornings

Many UK cinemas offer special discounted morning screenings during school holidays. Great for a rainy day — and with tickets often under £3, it’s a treat that doesn’t break the bank. Bring your own snacks to keep it budget-friendly!

8. Local Shows & Pantomimes

Keep an eye out for low-cost local theatre — from pop-up pantos to storytelling sessions in village halls. They’re usually very child-friendly and a fantastic way to introduce little ones to live entertainment.

9. Garden Obstacle Course or Chalk Games

Use garden furniture, soft toys, or cardboard boxes to create a homemade obstacle course. Or grab some pavement chalk and turn your driveway into a giant game board, complete with hopscotch and doodles.

10. Bug Safari & Mini Nature Missions

Head to a local green space and go on a bug hunt! Look for beetles, ants, butterflies and wiggly worms. Kids love using magnifying glasses or collecting leaves and petals to examine.

Bonus Tip for Grown-Ups:

If you need a little breather (totally valid!), why not book your child into a local summer sports camp or activity day? Even just one or two days can give you time to catch up on errands, rest, or enjoy a quiet cuppa in peace. Many are low-cost, council-run or offer sibling discounts too.
