Starting your weaning journey? It can feel a little overwhelming — but it really doesn’t have to be. One of the easiest and most gentle ways to introduce solids is with simple homemade veg purées. They're full of natural flavour, soft on little tummies, and easy to whip up in batches.
This Creamy Carrot & Sweet Potato Purée is one of our go-to favourites — naturally sweet, smooth in texture, and packed with goodness. Perfect from around 6 months as a first taste!
🥕 Creamy Carrot & Sweet Potato Purée
Ingredients:
-
1 medium sweet potato, peeled and chopped
-
2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped
-
A splash of cooled boiled water or baby’s usual milk (breast or formula)
Optional:
-
A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for added flavour (optional, add once baby is familiar with first veggies for a new flavour combo)
Method:
-
Steam or boil the sweet potato and carrot until soft (about 10–15 minutes depending on size).
-
Allow to cool slightly, then transfer to a blender or food processor. (You can mash with a fork as an alternative!)
-
Add a splash of cooled boiled water or milk to loosen the texture.
-
Blend until smooth — add more liquid if needed.
-
Serve a small spoonful and let baby explore!
👩🍳 Tips for Success:
-
Make extra and freeze in ice cube trays — easy to pop out and defrost in seconds. You can also then blend frozen cubes to form new varied meals as baby grows in confidence!
-
Start with a thinner texture and gradually make it thicker as your baby gets more confident.
-
Don’t worry if baby pulls a funny face — it’s all new! Keep offering and let them lead the pace. It takes several encounters with each flavour before they can make a real decision on whether they love it or hate it!
🧼 Bonus Bib Tip:
This one can get messy! Make mealtimes stress-free by popping on one of our Bibbilyboo long-sleeved feeding bibs — waterproof, wipeable and designed to catch all those sweet (and sticky!) dribbles.
Starting solids is such a lovely milestone — it’s messy, magical, and full of little wins. Keep it simple, go at your baby’s pace, and enjoy the journey.
