🌱 Weaning Stage 1: First Tastes – Starting Your Baby on Solids

Introducing your baby to their very first foods is such a special milestone. At this stage, the goal isn’t to fill them up – it’s simply to get them used to the new experience of eating, exploring textures, and learning new flavours.

Why Start with Savoury Veg?

Babies naturally prefer sweet flavours (breastmilk and formula are both sweet), so by beginning with vegetables, you help your little one develop a taste for savoury foods too. This makes it less likely they’ll reject greens later on.

Great first veg:

  • Carrot

  • Broccoli

  • Parsnip

  • Courgette

  • Green beans

Top Tips for First Tastes:

  • Offer food once a day after a milk feed.

  • Keep portions small – 1–2 teaspoons is plenty.

  • Don’t worry if baby spits it out; it’s all about learning.

  • Expect mess – it’s part of the fun!

Recipe: Simple Carrot Purée

  • 1 medium carrot, peeled & chopped

  • Steam or boil until soft (about 10 minutes).

  • Blend with a splash of cooking water until smooth.

  • Serve warm.
